Snap Back Visit

Snap Back Visit

DO IT FOR YOURSELF. DO IT FOR YOUR BABY.

If you just had a baby, the Snap Back Visit is an important part of your recovery. This visit usually takes place 4 to 6 weeks after delivery. Even if you are feeling fine, it’s important to see your doctor to make sure you are healing properly. It’s also a good time to see how you’re doing physically and emotionally and address your needs going forward.

At the Snap Back Visit, your doctor will:

  • Check your blood pressure, weight, temperature and breathing
  • Look at how your body is recovering from childbirth
  • Answer questions about breastfeeding
  • Discuss family planning and provide a birth control prescription if desired
  • Check on your emotional well-being
  • Provide follow-up for chronic health issues such as asthma, high blood pressure or diabetes

WHAT ABOUT SEX?

After having a baby, it’s recommended couples wait about 6 weeks to have sex. This allows time for your body to heal. At the Snap Back Visit, your doctor will make sure you are healing properly and talk about contraception.

  • If you want to get pregnant again, using family planning lets you space your pregnancies so there is enough time to let your body recover. Most experts recommend waiting at least 18 to 24 months between pregnancies.
  • If you decide not to get pregnant again, family planning will help you prevent pregnancy.

Sometimes physical or emotional issues come up that need immediate attention. Call your doctor right away if you think you need emergency care.
